The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, held on February 24, 2024, marked a significant milestone in awards season, streaming live exclusively on Netflix. This year’s event continued the trend of not having a host. Still, it featured a plethora of stars as presenters, including notable names such as SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, Emily Blunt, Sterling K. Brown, Michael Cera, Jessica Chastain, and many others. Idris Elba had the honor of opening the ceremony, while Jennifer Aniston presented a life achievement award to Barbra Streisand. The awards showcased nominees across both film and television categories, with “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” leading the film nominations with four each and the final season of “Succession” dominating the TV nominations with five nods.

This year also brought its share of surprises and snubs, stirring discussions among fans and critics alike. While favorites like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” received significant recognition, there were notable omissions that caught many off guard. “May December,” despite its Oscar buzz and recognition at the Golden Globes, failed to secure any nominations at the SAG Awards.

Similarly, “Air,” a drama detailing Nike’s signing of Michael Jordan and featuring a star-studded cast including Ben Affleck and Viola Davis, did not receive any nominations despite its previous accolades at other awards. Leonardo DiCaprio, despite his past SAG Award win for “The Revenant” and his role in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which garnered nominations for its cast and for Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone, was surprisingly left out of the individual nominations.

The SAG Awards, known for its focus on performers and their achievements, offers a unique perspective in the awards season, highlighting the collective efforts of casts in both film and television. The absence of a host for the second year emphasizes the event’s commitment to celebrating these performances without distraction, allowing the spotlight to remain firmly on the nominees and winners. As the awards streamed live on Netflix, it provided a global audience the opportunity to partake in the festivities, setting a precedent for accessibility in viewing prestigious award ceremonies.
